The application created by Laan Labs works by exploiting augmented reality and allows you to project a virtual meter in the real world. It will be available on iOS 11
There are some situations in which, and they are really many, it is very useful to have a meter at hand. However, it’s not always possible. A company has come up with a brilliant idea that will perhaps solve this problem once and for all: turn the tape measure and ruler into virtual objects.
Let’s figure this out. The company in question is called Laan Labs and has developed an application capable of replacing the famous measuring instrument. And also with a certain accuracy. In what way? Using augmented reality that, as is known, allows you to project virtual images in the real world. This means that to know the width or length of a piece of furniture (just to give a few examples) it will be enough to use the smartphone. Or rather the device’s camera. And as if by magic, on the display of the device, thanks to the application, the virtual meter will appear. Easy no?
How AR Measure works
AR Measure, this is the name of the application by Laan Labs, has been made to work with ARKit, the iOS 11 augmented reality platform, presented a few weeks ago by Apple during the Worldwide Developers Conference 2017 (WWDC). At the moment, therefore, it is not yet available for download. At this point, all that remains is to explain how it works. Very “simple”. Using augmented reality, AR Measure measures the distance between different points in 3D space.
To make measurements, simply point the camera at an object, establish a starting point and move the smartphone. And the virtual meter will do the rest.
