Google celebrates Luis Alberto Spinettadedicating him a Doodle on his 70th birthday. Here’s who he was
Google celebrates Luis Alberto Spinetta, Argentine singer, composer, guitarist and poet, dedicating him a Doodle, the image that replaces the Big G logo on the main page of the search engine. Perhaps few people know Luis Alberto Spinetta, but for Latin American music he was a true icon: thanks to him rock and roll was born in the Spanish language. Today he would have been 70 years old (he was born in Buenos Aires on January 23, 1950 and died in the Argentine capital on February 8, 2012) and Google has dedicated a Doodle to remember his greatness.
To call him a simple singer is reductive. Luis Alberto Spinetta was a musician in three hundred and sixty degrees: singer, guitarist, composer, keyboardist and bassist. For Argentina he is a sacred figure of the music scene so much so that January 23, the day of his birth, has been established as the Dia Nacional del Musico (National Day of the Musician). Died at the age of only 62, Luis Alberto Spinetta marked an indelible page of Argentine rock with the group Almendra.
The Life of Luis Alberto Spinetta
Born in Buenos Aires on January 23, 1950, Luis Alberto Spinetta began playing guitar and singing at a young age. At the age of 17, together with two of his teammates, he founded the group Almendra, which quickly became one of the reference groups of Argentine rock and of all Spanish-speaking music. The first album released (Almendra , like the name of the band) revolutionized Argentine progressive rock, becoming a musical milestone.
His musical activity has been very prolific: between 1970 and 1990 he actively participated in many groups and also released several solo albums. In total, his discography counts about forty albums released throughout his career. In 1978, he also gave to the prints a book of poetry: Guitarra Negra.
Almost seven years after his death, Luis Alberto Spinetta continues to influence the music of Argentina and beyond. In 2016, his last album Los Amigos won one of the most important music awards in Argentina: “Gold Gardel Album of the Year”. In April 2019, however, the University of Buenos Aires created an artificial intelligence program that automatically generates songs in the style of Luis Alberto Spinetta.
