Where to see Nomadland, the multi-awarded film at the Oscars 2021

The film has won three of the most important statuettes, arousing the curiosity of the public: but what is Nomadland about and where can you see it in Italy?

Nomadland is the film that triumphed at the Oscars 2021, earning three of the major awards. In fact, it was awarded for Best Picture, but also for Best Director, which went to Chloé Zhao, and Best Actress in a Leading Role to Frances McDomand. The achievement went down in history for several reasons.

Chloé Zhao is the second woman in Oscar history to receive the Best Director award and the first of Asian descent. The film is produced by Searchlight Pictures and premiered in 2020, immediately garnering important feedback. The Academy’s recognition is just the latest in a list of truly prestigious awards: for example, it also triumphed at the Golden Globes, where it won in the Best Drama Film and Best Director categories, and won the Golden Lion for Best Film at the last edition of the Venice International Film Festival. While waiting for theaters to reopen, the film can be watched on Disney +’s Star channel. Here’s what it’s about and when it will be released on streaming.

What Nomadland is about: the plot

Nomadland is based on Jessica Bruder’s book “Nomadland. A tale of inquiry”, published by Edizioni Clichy.

The protagonist is Frances McDormand, actress and winner of two Oscars, who plays the role of Fern, a woman who, after the economic collapse of her company town in rural Nevada (here are the film’s locations), sets out in her van in search of a life far removed from the conventional one.

The film tells the story of the woman’s wanderings through the boundless landscapes of the United States, areas far removed from the chaotic and crowded metropolises. The story is the real one of many people, especially the elderly, who cross America between one precarious job and another. In the cast we also find real nomads, Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells, mentors and fellow travelers of Fern.

Frances McDormand is particularly attached to this project, of which she is also co-producer, along with Peter Spears, Dan Janvey, Mollye Asher and the same director Chloé Zhao, who also worked on the editing.

This is the third openly indie film of the director, soon we will see in theaters a completely different film: The Eternals (The Eternals), the new Marvel Cinematic Universe signed work that is expected to debut in theaters in November 2021. Receiving the 2021 Academy Awards was therefore the icing on the cake of a career on the rise.

Where to see Nomadland

Due to anti-Covid restrictions, it is still unknown when the film will be released in theaters, which in many regions cannot reopen yet. In the regions where cinemas are open, the date for the first viewing is April 29 in theaters.

Those who prefer to watch the film in streaming will have to wait until April 30, when Nomadland will be released on the Star channel of Disney +, at no additional cost to all subscribers.
