WhatsApp, new tool to delete heavy files: how it works

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that allows you to discover and delete all the heaviest files in the memory of your smartphone. Here’s how to use it

One of the main problems of WhatsApp is the space taken up in memory by all the files and documents we receive every day on the hundreds of chats in which we are present. Between images and videos sent especially in groups, the giga occupied can become really many. With inevitable problems in the use of the smartphone: the more memory is occupied, the slower the device. So far, WhatsApp has never had an effective tool that helps users analyze the space taken up by files downloaded from chats in order to delete unnecessary photos and videos.

The work was left in the hands of users who had to use third-party apps to figure out which were the heaviest and most useless documents received on WhatsApp, so they could quickly delete them. Now, however, developers are working on a new tool that can potentially be a game changer. Technicians, in fact, are making a new user interface for the “Storage Usage” section present within the app’s settings. A redesign that will change WhatsApp forever.

WhatsApp, how “Storage Usage”

To show how the new WhatsApp tool will be are as always the guys at WaBetaInfo who have published a post on their personal blog. For the “Storage Usage” feature, this is a momentous change: the entire user interface will be overturned. At the moment those who access this tool (via Settings > Data & Storage Usage) only get the list of the “heaviest” conversations, i.e. those where the largest files have been sent and received. Entering inside each chat, you can discover several interesting data, such as the number of exchanged messages, photos, videos, audio messages and other multimedia content.

In the new interface everything will be overturned. The interface of the section will be divided into three parts: at the top the space occupied on the device memory by WhatsApp files, lower a tool that suggests which content to delete and at the bottom the list of the heaviest chats.

The most important novelty is the central one, under the heading “Suggested clean up”. Here users will find all the files received through the “forwarding” function (which in most cases are images, funny videos, GIFs or fake news) and all the heaviest files present on WhatsApp, put in the form of a ranking, from the heaviest to the lightest. It will be possible to analyze each item so that it can be eliminated in case it is useless.

When will the new feature arrive

There is still no certain date on the arrival of the new tool: WhatsApp technicians are working to start the first tests to understand if there are any problems. If the tests give a positive outcome, the new interface of the “Storage Usage” section will be released for everyone, both on Android and iOS smartphones.
