Modded apps are a modified version of the original apps and offer some premium features for free. Here’s why they’re dangerous
If you’re used to installing a lot of apps on your Android or iOS smartphone, be it video games or programs you use for work, very often you might have wondered if it’s worth installing one or more paid apps. Perhaps you’ve also wondered if it’s worth looking for and downloading a “modded” version of the app in question, and if it’s risky to do so.
A modded app is a normally paid app that has been modified by a developer other than the one who created it, so that it can be used even without paying for it. A modded app is an application that has been modified by a developer other than the one who created it, so that it can be used for free. At that time you had to burn the legal app’s CD and then, after installing it, you had to crack it, which usually consisted of replacing some files with the modified ones.
In the case of modded apps the matter is even simpler, because they are distributed “already cracked” and you just have to download and install them to start using them without paying. For Android, for example, there are thousands of Apk files for installing modded apps.
Where to find modded apps for iOS and Android
Modded apps, of course, are not found on the official Android and iOS stores: neither Google nor Apple would ever approve such an app. To find them, you have to look for them on alternative stores: there are dozens of sites on the Internet that distribute modified and ready-to-install apps. If you want to install a modded app on iOS, however, in many cases you’ll have to jailbreak your iPhone first.
What are the most downloaded modded apps
There are some modded apps that have reached a considerable number of downloads. These are the WhatApp fake apps, a modified version that allows users to use premium features not present in the original WhatsApp app, such as a particular font. The two most popular modded apps are WhatsApp Plus and GB WhatsApp. Using one of these apps, however, can be dangerous for the security of your personal data and even lead to the suspension of your WhatsApp account.
The risks of modded apps
Both with regard to modded apps for Android and those for iOS, of course, there is no shortage of risks. First of all, in the vast majority of cases they are illegal: if a paid software is protected by copyright, it can neither be modified nor be distributed in a free version without the developer’s permission. Also, it’s not certain that the app works 100% and, in any case, you won’t get any technical support for a modded app. Finally, and certainly the most important risk, there’s always the possibility that the modded app contains a virus, trojan or any other kind of malware. On the other hand, think about it: what better way to distribute a virus than to hide it in the free modded version of a paid app that everyone wants to install?
