Volvo S90, the smart car with Cortana and Skype signed by Microsoft

The Swedish company bets on technology again and relies on Microsoft this time as well. The services will be available on 90-series cars

Microsoft and Volvo continue to collaborate, following last year’s partnership that saw the two companies work together to create an intelligent system for controlling cars. Skype and Cortana, in fact, could soon be coming to cars produced by the historic Swedish automaker.

The project starts with a simple idea: allow business people to make their important video conferences from the car as well. Skype for Business is ready to land on the Volvo. According to what the Scandinavian company says, the service will be installed on the 90 series cars. Professionals will be able to organize their work directly from the cockpit, participating in meetings thanks to the technology made available by the two companies. And without getting distracted from driving, as Anders Tylman-Mikiewicz, vice president of Consumer Connectivity Services at Volvo, also claims.

Safer driving thanks to Cortana

Volvo will be the first car manufacturer to implement Microsoft’s VoIP technology. “People feel the need to be productive from anywhere, even from their cars,” says Ben Canning of Skype Business. And that’s not all, because the two companies would like to improve safety behind the wheel by bringing Cortana to the Swedish company’s cars.

The intelligent digital assistant, developed by Redmond and installed on Windows 10, would give drivers a smart tool to use to activate Skype or the many features in cars. After home appliances, Cortana therefore also arrives on cars. The two companies have not yet revealed further details. In fact, it is still unknown how long it will take before Skype and Cortana will be on board of Volvo’s cars.
