UArm Swift the desktop robotic arm that prints in 3D

UArm Play is a robotic arm made with an open-source platform that rivals far more expensive industrial models

It’s called uArm Swift and it’s currently seeking funding on Indiegogo to go into production. If it reaches its goal, it would be one of those tools dreamed of by geeks and DIY enthusiasts everywhere.

The uArm Swift robotic arm is capable – with proper programming of the open-source Arduino software platform – of performing precise tasks, such as assembly, 3D printing, laser cutting, art drawing, picking up objects, playing backgammon (or other games) and even spinning sugar in coffee. There are two versions of this “smart” arm: the standard model and the Pro model, which, of course, offers more advanced features and greater power and precision in performing various tasks. A decidedly extravagant device that you can manage thanks to a special smartphone app.

How uArm Swift works

If you’re looking for a system to perform delicate or high-intensity repetitive tasks, the uArm Swift is definitely up to the challenge. uArm Swift is the basic version of the robotic arm to which you can delegate precision tasks such as drawing, laser engraving, and painting, just to name a few. The arm performs high-precision movements effortlessly thanks to the combination of a parallel mechanical frame and a servo control that gives it the right balance when in use. The frame is constructed from an aluminum alloy giving it a strong yet lightweight structure capable of supporting loads up to 500 grams. For professional applications or tasks that require faster and more accurate response, the uArm Swift Pro version is ideal. This more professional edition includes all the features of the standard Swift robotic arm, but with a more powerful motor (browse the photo gallery above to see how the robotic arm works).

Communication via Bluetooth

Both models – Swift and Swift Pro – allow you to initiate and control all operations remotely via a wireless connection via Bluetooth. Both the uArm Studio app for Windows and uArm Play for mobile devices offer complete control of the device. A graphical programming interface allows Swift to be controlled with a few simple gestures. The uArm Studio program comes with mouse, keyboard and gesture control so you can program Swift with extreme precision. The uArm Play app supports taps and swipes for precise movements of the robot arm.

Price and release date uArm Swift

The robotic arm is also quite affordable. The price for the basic model is $209, about 200 euros, while the super-equipped version can go for $499, just over 470 euros.
