Twitter is officially testing voice messages: here’s how

Twitter is also betting on voice: the possibility to send 140-second voice DMs to contacts is already being tested in some countries.

The craze of the moment, that is voice messages, has also hit Twitter. The platform dedicated to chirping has in fact started field testing for the feature that allows you to send short recordings through DMs, or direct – and completely private – communications between users.

As happened to Facebook, which decided to implement a similar service in its chat, for Twitter everything started with the worldwide success of the app dedicated to voice communication: Clubhouse. In any case, the novelty of voice messages is not exactly new for the 140-character platform. Last June, it had already included the sharing of voice tweets among its features for Apple users. Then came Twitter Spaces, a feature presented in December 2020 but still in the testing phase, which follows the operation of the main competitor app in terms of vocal targeting users who do not want to give up the interaction through voice even between a tweet and another.

Vocal messages on Twitter, how they work

According to a first video presentation published by the official account of Twitter India, voice messages would follow the style of communication of the platform. They are short recordings (maximum 140 seconds, according to the clip), started by a button in the usual form of a red circle, whose remaining time is shown during recording by a specific indicator.

Once completed, you can listen to the message and decide to send it, or delete it via a dedicated button. Two modes are available for recording. The first one involves double pressing the REC button, for start and stop, and is available for both Android and iOS; the second one, only for Apple devices, allows you to hold the button, releasing it upon completion and proceeding to send it via swipe up, without hearing what was recorded.

Twitter voice messages, who will they be available for

The Twitter feature is destined to pop up exclusively on mobile devices, specifically on apps dedicated to Android and iOS operating systems. All users who access from desktop browsers, however, will still be able to listen to voice messages sent to them but will not be able to record new ones to respond to their contacts.

Twitter, when will voice

As anticipated, the feature is currently still in the testing phase and is only available to some users in Brazil, Japan and India but, according to what Twitter said, the number is expected to increase in the coming days. If the general tests were to have a positive outcome, the platform could decide to introduce in the coming months the feature for all users permanently, thus adding it to those available. So all that remains is to wait.
