Travis, the instant portable translator that knows 80 languages

Powered by artificial intelligence, the Travis instant translator doesn’t need a smartphone to work. On the market by winter

How great would it be if each of us could speak many languages? A lot. We could travel comfortably without worrying about the idiom of the place. Think, then, of business meetings organized in countries where English is not the language spoken. Fantasy? Absolutely not.

A startup has created a pocket-sized device capable of translating more than eighty languages simultaneously and in a matter of seconds. Travis, the name of the wearable, is a pocket translator that doesn’t need to be integrated with any mobile device. The hi-tech tool produced by Travis Translator, a company based in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, comes with its own 3G connection. The pocket translator can also work offline. In this case, however, the number of languages that Travis is capable of translating drops to twenty.

How Travis Works

Travis has a touch display, through which you’ll be able to manage and activate the different languages to be translated. But the most important aspect of the device is the set of internal technical features. The translator has been built using artificial intelligence and machine learning. This means that, according to what the startup claims, the pocket translator is able to detect and translate spoken languages in perfect autonomy. And that’s not all. The device’s translation system will learn to improve over time. The startup, moreover, is also supposedly perfecting a neural network with the aim of giving Travis the ability to understand accents and slang.

Travis’ technical specifications

Taking a look at the other technical specifications, the Dutch company’s device runs on a quad-core processor, has a battery that can last up to 7 days on standby. In addition to 3G connection, the device mounts Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support. It integrates two directional microphones, useful for ambient noise reduction, amplified speakers and headphone connector.

Date and release price

The startup to finance the pocket translator has launched a campaign on Indiegogo, one of the main crowdfunding platforms. Travis Translator aims to deliver the device by the end of 2017: between June and July the translator will first be delivered to “backers”, i.e. economic supporters, and then in winter it will hit the shelves. Starting price: $139 (at today’s exchange rate, about €130).
