This selfie app tells you which is your best profile

Through the analysis of an algorithm this application allows us, before taking a shot, to know which is our best profile to use in selfies

The arrival of selfies, or selfies as you may call them, has revolutionized the world of photography especially at the mobile level. There’s no denying it. Even the world of applications has adapted, and filters have been created, even in augmented reality, to have funĀ and to make their images unique.

Although by now selfies no longer represent a great novelty, users continue to appreciate them, and so during the 2017 edition of the ACM Conference on Designing Interactive Systems, held in Edinburgh, Scotland, a new application was presented that could forever change the method by which we take selfies. Thanks to some special algorithms, the app shows us the best place to place the phone before shooting, based on our most photogenic profile.

The app for perfect selfies

Professor Dan Vogel, of the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, explained how the app works: “Nowadays many users use apps to apply filters in post-production or to modify their faces with stickers and smilies (think Instagram and Snapchat). This new app, on the other hand, allows you to figure out before the shot what will be the perfect angle for our selfie.” Random shots of hundreds of volunteers were used to make the app. In this way, the algorithm learned how to analyze the various faces of people to indicate the right profile to use on social networks and in shots with friends. To get an answer on people’s preferences, the researchers showed the volunteers some of the shots considered by the app to be the most successful. Based on the various user choices, the algorithms were set up to give an answer that would please as many people as possible.
