The iPhone X 2019 will have a 3D camera

Apple will introduce a 3D photo sensor also in the back of the smartphone: it will allow to interact with the reality around us

New anticipations continue to arrive on the iPhone X 2019 that Apple will present in September. This time they concern the rear photo module: the Cupertino company, in addition to providing the iPhone with a triple camera, would also like to integrate a 3D sensor similar to the one used for FaceID. The goal is to improve ARKit, Apple’s technology that allows the development of augmented reality applications.

Presented as one of the most important innovations of iOS 11, AR apps have failed to break through. There are several reasons for this: difficult to use, not very interactive content. The new sensor that Apple wants to integrate inside the 2019 iPhone (or the 2020 iPhone X) will allow to greatly improve this technology and scan objects up to a distance of almost 5 meters. The 3D sensor will be able to map everything around us and assess the depth of field, so users will be able to add virtual objects using augmented reality.

How the iPhone X 2019 3D sensor will work

The news was reported by Bloomberg, which reports sources inside Apple. The 3D sensor would be similar to the one already used for the FaceID, but with the ability to scan objects up to a maximum of 5 meters. The technology Apple is working on will allow the 3D laser sensor to be used not only for augmented reality applications, but also to improve the quality of shots. Thanks to more detailed information about the depth of field, images taken with the iPhone will be (almost) perfect. To make this 3D sensor Apple is working together with Sony, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of smartphone lenses.

What the 3D sensor will be used for on the 2019 iPhone

The 3D laser sensor will allow users to discover new features that Apple has been developing in recent months. Augmented reality will become a technology within reach and truly useful in everyday life. You will be able to use AR applications to decorate your home or to try on new pairs of shoes before buying them without having to leave the house.

Apple’s future

In addition to the new 2019 iPhones, Apple is also working on other innovative devices that will be unveiled next year. And they are always about augmented reality. According to reports from Bloomberg, the Cupertino-based company is ready to present AR glasses, similar to Google Glass. The project is at an advanced stage and Apple is betting a lot on this device.
