The digitization of Italian SMEs passes through e-commerce and Big Data

A questionnaire carried out on 550 companies has shown the main objectives in the next three years in the field of digitization and recruitment of new figures

What will Italian SMEs focus on in the next three years in the digital field? This question was answered by a questionnaire carried out on almost 550 companies by TAG Innovation School, Cisco Italia and Intesa Sanpaolo, with the support of the researchers of the Master in Digital Transformation for Made in Italy.

The research shows that using big data (39%), being contaminated by startups (39%) and enhancing online sales (37%) are the digital activities that Italian SMEs intend to focus on the most in the next three years. The survey also asked SMBs which professional figures are most wanted in the next 3 years of activity: experts in digital marketing strategies (Digital Marketing Specialist, 60%), specialists in data analysis (Data Analyst, 50%), consultants for the implementation of the “digital transformation” (Digital Officer, 32%) and developers of mobile solutions (Mobile Developer, 31%).

Digitization Benefits

According to the sample surveyed, the vast majority of Italian SMBs see digital innovation as a resource for reducing business costs (78%) and believe that automation and cloud services will bring big increases in productivity (74%). Among the major benefits indicated by the companies surveyed in relation to Digital Transformation are improvements in customer relations (80%) and internal organization (74%). “It is clear to Italian companies,” says Alessandro Rimassa, Director of TAG Innovation School, “that in order to best address the current market, it is necessary to rethink business models and production organization and develop strategies based on digital.”

The Kit and the Master

TAG Innovation School has also developed a toolkit (Digital Transformation Toolkit) to test the degree of digital innovation of a company and accelerate its development in a simple and intuitive way. The Digital Transformation Toolkit makes immediately usable and applicable in one’s own company a series of tools and methodologies to design the digital strategy and analyze the results. As for the Master in Digital Transformation for Made in Italy, it has been created to train consultants to support companies in the process of digitalization of their business.
