Apple’s new signature smartphone will unlock by reading the vein system of the face. Here’s how it will work
The 2019 iPhone X is preparing to bring a breath of innovation to the phone landscape. The novelty concerns the evolution of Face ID, which will soon allow to unlock the phone, not only based on the face, but even reading the position of the facial veins. Biometric recognition thus reaches new frontiers.
Until a few years ago, the revolution was dictated by the use of fingerprints to unlock the phone, but vein scanning is undoubtedly a leap forward. In fact, according to some sources, Apple has acquired new patents that allow it to leverage Face ID to read what’s inside the face, not just on the surface. In fact, the morphology of the venous system is a unique feature that can be used as a password to access the mobile device. Unlocking then becomes even more personal and secure.
iPhone X 2019: to unlock the smartphone you will scan your veins
Just place the iPhone in front of your face and the security sensor will be able to map the venous system. If it recognizes it, the phone will unlock. On the contrary, it will be inaccessible.
According to rumors, Apple bought the patent for vein scanning in February 2018, and since then it has been working on a new system to unlock mobile devices. The article mentions a front-facing camera that will be included in the 2019 iPhone X and will allow it to distinguish even the smallest veins on the face. This feature will make access to the smartphone even more personal and secure. For example, the device will be able to distinguish even the face of homozygotic twins, thanks to the different position of the veins in the face. This feature for now is identified as subepidermal imaging, and it is still in full working order.
According to rumors, the reading of the veins will be done via infrared rays, and the processor would calculate the information using a series of procedures described in the patents. Unfortunately, it is not yet known for sure if the feature will be included in the 2019 iPhone X but there are all the prerequisites since the license has been acquired for quite some time now.
Venous Scanning: not only iPhone
Apple is not the only company that is focusing on vein scanning to unlock the phone. The feature is already present on the LG G8 ThinQ will take advantage of this technology, but we will only know at the end of 2019, when it will be launched on the market. Many companies are focusing on this feature to increase the level of security of smartphones. No further details are known yet, but it definitely looks like Apple is about to introduce the world to the new feature, which will hopefully come with the launch of the 2019 iPhone X.
