Telephony, the new prefixes are coming: how to recognize the operator

With the assignment of the new prefixes, telephone operators can already generate phone numbers and issue SIM cards: here are the new prefixes that we can see among the incoming calls.

As periodically happens in order to continue to allow the development of the mobile market, the Ministry of Economic Development (MISE) has updated the list of telephone prefixes assigned to individual operators authorized to issue new SIM cards in Italy.

The new prefixes, communicated by MISE on February 5 and made known by the trade publication MondoMobileWeb, will be used by operators to generate new phone numbers for new mobile users and are therefore already available. Many new numbers concern virtual operators, such as PosteMobile, Plintron (which aggregates the virtual operators Rabona Mobile, NTMobile and NoiTel), Kena Mobile (TIM group) and Very Mobile (WindTre group). Finally, the telephone prefix 3216, which was owned by Acotel Spa but has been officially abandoned since the company was acquired by Soflab, disappears.

The new telephone prefixes 2021

PosteMobile already had the telephone prefixes 3711, 3713, 3714 and 3715. From February 5, it also gets the prefix 3716.

The telephone prefixes 3500, 3501 and 3505 change ownership, but in practice they remain assigned by Kena Mobile. This is in fact a simple company change: the prefixes were owned by Nòverca Srl and now they pass to Telecom Italia (which owns Nòverca Srl).

Similar matter for the numbers assigned to the companies of the Wind Tre Spa group, which brings together the former Wind Telecomunicazioni Spa and H3G, as well as the virtual operator Very Mobile. Now the group has the prefixes 320, 324, 327, 328, 329, 373, 388, 389, 391, 392 and 393.

When the new phone numbers arrive

The new numbers assigned by the Ministry of Economic Development are already active for all intents and purposes. This means that when activating a new SIM card, users could already receive a phone number with one of these prefixes.

So who in the next weeks will receive a phone call from one of these new prefixes should not be alarmed: they are regular Italian numbers and not foreign numbers used for illegitimate purposes, as often happened in the past.
