The Special Technological Fraud Unit of the GdF has dealt a severe blow to television piracy. Denounced 4 people who were routing the signal of pay-TV
The work of the Guardia di Finanza to put a brake on television piracy continues unceasingly. After having obscured 50 sites that allowed people to read newspapers and magazines for free, the Nucleo Speciale Frodi Tecnologiche (Special Technological Fraud Unit) identified three television broadcasting stations in Naples.
The Match Off 3.0 operation dealt a heavy blow to television piracy: the investigations led to the denunciation of 4 people and the seizure of over 76,000 euros, of which 18,000 in cash, 17 PostePay cards, 235 decoders, 104 smart cards and 43 personal computers. The system set up allowed the viewing both in live streaming of television events covered by copyright (TV series, movies and sporting events) and in streaming on demand according to the requests of users. The company set up in the Naples area offered free access to all pay-TV channels upon payment of an annual subscription of seventy euros.
How the system worked
The service offered by the four fraudsters worked in a very simple way. They decrypted the pay-TV signal and retransmitted it online, making it available to their “customers” scattered throughout Italy. The four fraudsters risk up to four years’ imprisonment and a fine of 15,000 euros. During the search they also found “dozens of photocopies of documents of completely unaware people, victims of identity theft”.
