South Korean TV series becomes the most watched TV series ever on Netflix which, for the occasion, gives fans a gift: here are all the details and what fans can expect
The cruel and merciless children’s games of Squid Game have officially beaten Bridgerton’s love dramas. Well, yes, about a month after its release, the South Korean TV series is the most watched series ever on Netflix with 111 million accounts gained in the first 28 days since its debut on September 17, 2021.
The record until a few days ago was held by Bridgerton, content produced by Shonda Rhimes, which has engaged about 82 million users globally, as of December 2020. These are staggering numbers that are unlikely to be reached by other products. Consider, for example, that The House of Paper currently gathers about 67 million views. The success of Squid Game has left everyone speechless, including the co-CEO of Netflix Ted Sarandos, who had however speculated record numbers after the first days since the launch and is already thinking about the second season.
Squid Game record-breaking: Netflix’s gift
The k-drama has now become a worldwide phenomenon and, just before Halloween, on Amazon and other e-commerce you can find many costumes inspired by the TV series, as well as merchandise of all kinds. To celebrate the moment, Netflix has posted on its social channels a truly original thank you video.
Qui, the evil protagonist, addresses the millions of people who have watched the TV series in recent weeks and says that it took 10 years for the creator of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, to finish and publish the project, but only 17 days to turn the show into the “number 1 in the world”. The video alternates between some of the most iconic scenes from the series. The metallic voice at the end of the clip ironically asks viewers if they would like to join the game.
It should be noted that for Netflix, a series is “viewed” when an account presses play and watches an episode for at least two minutes. Therefore, the number of people who have watched all episodes of Squid Game from start to finish is not actually known.
What is Squid Game about
The k-drama tells the story of 456 desperate people in dire need of money who, one day, get involved in a secret game that takes place in an unknown location.
Whoever wins will be awarded a jackpot of 45.6 million won (about 33 million euros). The special feature is that the characters have to overcome several typical children’s games, from tug-of-war to “one, two, three star”. The loser is killed. In the end, only one winner will remain.
Those who haven’t watched the TV series yet can do so now on Netflix.
