Sony, two PlayStation 5s on the way: second one for cloud gaming

In the United States Sony has obtained a new patent on a cloud gaming device: it could be a second PS5. Here’s what we know

The PlayStation 5 is one of the most anticipated devices of next year. The hype is slowly growing and are more and more rumors and reports that speak of the characteristics of the console. The data sheet seems now outlined: the PS5 will be four times more powerful than the PS4 Pro and will be able to natively support games with 4K resolution.

In recent days have also appeared online patents obtained by Sony on alleged new devices dedicated to gaming. We have already talked about the first one: it is the PS5 used by developers to create the first videogames that will be released together with the console. This is not the model that we will see on the market, but only the test model. The second patent, however, is very curious and is making a lot of talk about itself. It is a device for cloud gaming and could suggest a depowered PS5 that only supports on-demand services.

This would be a real novelty for the world of Sony, but the idea is not far-fetched. The Japanese company is making big investments in this area, to counter the imminent arrival of Google Stadia, the new service that wants to retire the consoles. Sony is boosting PlayStation Now, the on-demand platform that allows you to play about 600 titles from the PS2, PS3 and PS4 on your PC and console. With the release of the PS5, the service is expected to be further enhanced.

PS5: is a cloud gaming version coming?”

The announcement of Google Stadia has shuffled the cards a bit in the gaming world. Microsoft and Sony have had to accelerate their projects on cloud gaming and this may have led Sony to patent a console dedicated exclusively to streaming services. A “depowered” PS5, which could cost less and be more attractive to fans. In support, however, there should also be a PlayStation Now more efficient and with greater support for the latest titles released for the console Sony.

For the moment Sony has not wanted to comment on the news of the new patent dedicated to a cloud device. So we don’t know if it’s really an alternative PS5, or a completely different device dedicated exclusively to cloud gaming.

When will the PS5 be released

It seems now certain that the PlayStation 5 will be released on the market for the Christmas period 2020: the official presentation should take place early next year. Along with the PS5, the Xbox Project Scarlett, Microsoft’s next-generation console, will also be released.
