The Fossil Gen 6, the manufacturer’s next smartwatch with Google’s recent Wear OS 3, are highly anticipated: here’s what they’ll look like according to Amazon
The offensive on the smartwatch industry’s reference – the Apple Watch – has just begun. It’s been just a few days since the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Watch4, the two models that have brought to debut Wear OS 3, an important revision of the operating system for wearables developed by Google.
With Wear OS 3 Google, along with Samsung with which the operating system was developed, finally hopes to subtract from Apple considerable market share, and only time will tell if the goal will be achieved. In the meantime, however, the list of products compatible with Google’s new operating system for wearables is ready to expand by welcoming Fossil Gen 6 smartwatches, which, as we had the opportunity to elaborate, was not a foregone conclusion. Fossil smartwatches aren’t official yet, but thanks to a programming error the manufacturer’s sixth generation appeared for a few moments on Amazon’s German portal: so now a bunch of very reliable information is in the public domain.
Fossil Gen 6, what they’ll be like
Let’s make it clear right away that despite the Galaxy Watch4, as mentioned, relying on Wear OS 3, the user interface of the two will differ from the one present on Fossil’s smartwatches (as well as from all non-Samsung products that will come to market) because in Seoul they have customized the system with the One UI Watch interface. The Fossils will likely have the “pure” Wear OS 3 experience with all the Google apps in tow, so the new YouTube Music and Google Maps.
There will be space, because as unveiled by Amazon the sixth-generation Fossil smartwatches will have 8 GB of storage in which to install apps and download music. There will then be a 1.28-inch OLED display with 416 x 416 pixels. It will probably have the Always on Display to always have the time at your fingertips, a possibility granted by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 4100+ chip that includes a low-power co-processor designed to support this kind of functions without mortifying the autonomy.
The release on Amazon has allowed us to detect the stated figure precisely on autonomy: according to what is indicated Fossil Gen 6 smartwatches would arrive at 24 hours on a charge, which is not much but it is still true that the figure appeared on the platform does not specify in which energy mode. There is however fast charging, and with 30 minutes of “refueling” the battery reaches 80% of the charge, while it takes an hour to get to 100%.
In terms of functionality, the Fossil Gen 6 will be able to monitor heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, number of steps and sleep patterns, with GPS providing adequate support for physical activities, including those in water thanks to the certified water resistance up to 50 meters deep. They would, however, lack NFC.
Fossil Gen 6, price and availability
The Fossil Gen 6 is expected to arrive in Germany on September 27 starting at 299 euros needed for the 42mm version, 329 euros for the 44mm version. It’s not yet clear if a variant with LTE connectivity will arrive and when they will also arrive in Italy.
