The solar-powered green lighting system includes 4G and Wi-Fi connectivity and allows electric vehicles to recharge
The future of cities is getting smarter. After LED streetlights that recharge with steps, technology has gone even further. The startup Totem has, in fact, unveiled a new system of energy and communication.
The technology described by the project involves the use of completely green palm-shaped structures, powered by solar panels and that soon could replace traditional light poles. The totems in fact, in addition to providing the energy needed to illuminate the streets, offer in a single solution a range of smart services, which include charging for electric vehicles, a set of smart lights, 4G internet connection and connection in Wi-Fi mode. Cities therefore are increasingly at the center of the Internet of Things. Brian Lakamp, the company’s CEO, says that “the combination of communication and energy infrastructures lays the foundation for the development of smart services for cities.”

The system developed by the New York-based startup uses clean energy. In fact, the totems are powered by two batteries that are recharged thanks to the sun’s rays. On the highest part of the pole, which resembles a palm tree, there are solar panels. Going down, we find the set of smart lights, while the body of the pole houses, in addition to the two batteries, the Wi-Fi connection, 4G and finally, the charging unit for electric cars.
We are there too
Lately there are many companies trying to find energy solutions that are increasingly intelligent and above all with a lower environmental impact. Among these we find Menowatt GE, an Italian startup that has developed a smart streetlight for the cities of the future. Meridio is an energy-efficient LED pole that includes sensors that measure air quality and communicate with gas and electricity meters.
