Skype introduces real time translations also to landlines and mobiles

Skype, software from Microsoft’s stable, announced on its blog a new piece in its mission to break down language barriers

If until yesterday the translation function was only available between Skype-to-Skype users, now the function is extended – in real time – also to mobiles and landlines. A great opportunity for those who do not yet “chew” foreign languages very well.

The Skype Translator service was introduced in December 2014 for English and Spanish and, since then has continued to add other idioms that include Italian, Chinese (Mandarin), Russian, Arabic, French, German and Portuguese (Brazilian). The system behind the real-time translation service uses artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and, specifically, machine learning which – with the help of artificial neural networks – are able to learn and progressively improve from experience. It should also not be forgotten that Skype also offers traditions in more than 50 languages for text conversations in the context of instant messaging.

Simultaneous Translations

It is a service that is not yet available, as mentioned, for all languages and that requires three fundamental conditions to be used. First of all, you have to be enrolled in the Windows Insider program, which is open to everyone and allows you to receive and try out preview versions of Microsoft programs and provide feedback. The second requirement is to have the latest version of Skype Preview and, finally, to have a minimum amount of Skype credit.

How does it work?

Translation works exactly as it does now for normal calls between Skype users. When users type in the number they want to call, a Translate button appears next to the “phone” keypad with a dropdown from which to select the language. When the person answers on the other side of the “handset”, a voice will warn that the call will be recorded and translated. The reason is simple, the system must have time to translate, and therefore the conversation will be slightly delayed, but so slight that it will still guarantee an excellent translated chat (almost) in real time.
