It’s official: Sky from 2020 will be a telephone operator. Here’s what will change for the market and users
A few days ago, Maximo Ibarra, CEO of Sky officially confirmed the rumors that had been circulating for some time: the company will not only manage the Pay TV service but from 2020 it will also become a telephone operator. During the event celebrating 20 years of Gambero Rosso, the CEO let himself go to some details related to the operation.
Although we don’t know the official date yet, starting from next year the telephony sector could radically change: the entry into play of a power like Sky will undoubtedly change the scenario. Certainly the company will propose solutions for fixed telephony and perhaps later also for mobile telephony (in Great Britain it is already present with Sky Mobile). Its offer will certainly be “all inclusive” and will integrate premium services, including the enormous catalog of TV programs, series, movies and formats that have always characterized the famous Pay TV. These are just some of the new features coming. But what will change for the market and for users?
Sky becomes a telephone operator: the details of the operation
As anticipated by IlSole24Ore, Sky with the support of Fastweb is preparing to enter the fixed telephony market. The rumour had been circulating for some time, but it has finally been confirmed by the CEO of the company Maximo Ibarra.
In addition, the historic Pay TV giant had already signed the commitment at the Public Register of Communication Operators – AGCOM, and this suggests that Sky not only plans to access fixed telephony, but also mobile.
Now, thanks to the partnership with Fastweb and Open Fiber you can be even more secure. Alberto Calcagno, CEO of Fastweb also said he was very pleased with the partnership. During the inauguration of the new headquarters in Milan called Nexxt he confirmed the start of the important agreement “We will also be an industrial partner of Sky. We have always sold our services to those who require them, and this will also be the case with Sky.”
Sky’s acceleration in the fixed line telephony market came together with Maximo Ibarra’s assumption of the role of CEO. CEO of Sky Italia for about six months, the manager has already put to work his skills previously gained at two major Italian telephone giants, such as Wind and Telecom. His experience in the sector, strengthened by his collaboration with Open Fiber and Fastweb, will make the process simpler and faster. The aim is to follow in the footsteps of Sky UK, which has already been playing the role of telephone operator in the UK for some time.
What will change for users?
For the moment, we do not know the details related to the offers nor what the specific repercussions will be for users. Certainly Sky subscribers will be affected, but it is not yet known how and to what extent. Most likely Sky will propose to its customers all-inclusive offers with phone calls, internet and subscription to the packages of the satellite broadcaster at attractive prices.
