Italian TV series tells the world of teens without frills. Here are other similar titles available for streaming.
Skam Italia is the most popular Italian teen drama of recent years. The TV series, consisting of four seasons, was born as a webseries linked to the homonymous franchise born in 2015.
The goal of the Skam project is to tell the way of living the teenage years in different European countries and to deal with some of the main issues related to this age and beyond: the first love relationships, sexuality, the search for one’s gender identity, bullying and so on. The Italian version, specifically, is focused on the life of a group of boys in Rome and is created by Ludovico Bessegato. It was initially broadcast on TIMvision then moved to Netflix, where it made a real splash. Each season focuses on a specific character, and this allows for different themes to be addressed based on their characteristics, doubts, passions and problems. Are there any series similar to Skam Italia? The answer is yes, after all, the genre is one of the most followed in streaming. Let’s see then the three titles not to be missed.
Series similar to Skam: Sex Education on Netflix
The first TV series to watch after Skam Italia is definitely Sex Education, which has many similarities with the Italian title. First of all, both immerse themselves in the world of adolescents, without rhetoric or paternalism, but with the clear intent to tell all its facets.
Sex Education, unlike Skam, is more focused on issues related to sexuality and gender identity. Everything revolves around the clandestine sex counseling clinic organized by the two protagonists of the series, Otis (Asa Butterflies) and Maeve (Emma Mackey). Around them revolve many characters, both young and old, perfectly characterized, just like those of the Italian series.
Themes of sexuality and gender identity also appear in Skam, although they do not play such a central role. We find them, for example, in the second season dedicated to Martino (Federico Cesari).
Sex Education is available on Netflix.
Skins on Netflix
Those who want to dwell on adolescence can also watch Skins. The TV series was created with the intention of telling the world of youth without frills.
In fact, the producer Bryan Elsley in the cast included only young people under twenty years, to make the show more credible. In the series appear central themes such as anorexia, the sense of abandonment but also addictions and mental disorders.
It is a series more raw than the Italian one, which is very close to Euphoria, but still necessary to see the often hidden side of adolescence. Among the similarities with Skam, there is the fact that each episode focuses on a particular character.
Skins is available on Netflix.
Atypical on Netflix
Adolescence is a difficult time for any kid, but Atypical takes it a step further: it tells the story of the adolescence of an autistic boy and does so in a deep way, but with extreme delicacy, without ever falling into the banal.
The plot revolves around the life of Sam (Keir Gilchrist) and his perfectly imperfect family, perhaps unprepared for the growth and the need for emancipation of their son, but ready to accompany him and help him grow. The TV series brings fundamental themes to the small screen and is sure to break the hearts of Skam fans.
Atypical is available on Netflix.
