Samsung’s fitness news

In addition to the Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy Fold, Samsung took advantage of Unpacked 2019 to unveil its new wearables dedicated to the world of sports

At the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event in San Francisco, the attention was captured by the highly anticipated new range of Galaxy S10 smartphones and the Galaxy Fold, the first foldable smartphone from the top mobile device manufacturer. The Korean giant has also presented other interesting devices and two of them can help us stay in shape.

We are talking about the Galaxy Watch Active and the Galaxy Fit, both already abundantly announced in recent months but only now seeing the light. As the names imply, these are wearable devices designed for lovers of sports and training. Thanks to the two new Samsung wearables, in short, you can keep track of your physical activity, monitor the hours and quality of sleep and much more. Let’s see in detail how they are the Galaxy Watch Active and Galaxy Fit.

Galaxy Watch Active, features and price

As expected, the Galaxy Watch Active is the budget version of the Galaxy Watch, although the appearance and build quality do not seem from low cost device. It has a screen, touchscreen, 1.1 inches in size and 360×360 pixels in resolution. The case of this smart watch is 40 millimeters and has two side buttons to manage the various controls.

The Galaxy Watch Active replaces the previous Samsung Gear Sport, but has superior functionality. It integrates Samsung’s Tizen 4.0.0.3 operating system and has a linear acceleration sensor, gravity sensor and a stress monitoring algorithm that alerts us when we’re playing too much sport or moving around too much, based on our heart rate.

It features 1 Amp fast charging and shared charging: you can charge it by placing it against the Samsung Galaxy S10. Finally, the Galaxy Watch Active includes support for Samsung’s Bixby personal assistant, which is activated with the “Hi Bixby” command.

The Galaxy Watch Active’s processor is a 1.15 GHz dual-core Exynos 9110, associated with 4 GB of storage and 768 MB of RAM. The smartwatch is equipped with Bluetooth 4.2, WiFi (802.11b/g/n), NFC and GPS. The price set by Samsung for the Galaxy Watch Active is $200, slightly more than the Gear Sport and much less than the Apple Watch Series 3’s $279. Far from the $399 needed to buy an Apple Watch Series 4.

Galaxy Fit, features and price

The Samsung Galaxy Fit, on the other hand, more than a smartwatch is a smart fitness band: it replaces the previous Gear Fit 2 from 2016 and the Gear Fit 2 Pro from 2017, offering partly superior and partly inferior functionality.

Despite the smaller screen size and resolution (0.95 inches with 240×120 pixels of the Galaxy Fit versus the 1.5 inches with 432×216 pixels of the two Gear Fit), this new device confirms 512 MB of RAM, cuts storage to 2 GB but adds support for NFC, Bluetooth and water resistance up to 5 atmospheres (okay in the shower, but you can’t bathe in it).

It also has heart rate monitor, accelerometer, gyroscope and a week of battery life even when set to monitor sleep. It is, therefore, a device calibrated to the needs of athletes without any other additional features. The Samsung Galaxy Fit will be sold at a still unknown price, starting in the second quarter of 2019.
