Google introduces VoIP calls on the Google Voice app: you will be able to call your friends using your smartphone’s Wi-Fi network or data connection
Big news in the world of mobile telephony: Google has started the release of VoIP calls for the Google Voice app. This is an important step for the Mountain View company: Google Voice so far only allowed to make calls through the desktop app, with the arrival on mobile becomes a potential competitor for WhatsApp and FaceTime.
VoIP calls allow you to make a phone conversation using an Internet connection and using a virtual number. To be clear, it is a service very similar to WhatsApp voice calls. In recent years, the Mountain View company has never managed to get the Google Voice project off the ground, a phone service now present since 2011 in Italy. With the arrival of VoIP calls, Google Voice is strengthened with a new feature that could become very useful especially for those who have a subscription with many gigs available. For the moment VoIP calls are available only in the United States, but should also arrive in Italy.
How VoIP calls work with Google Voice
To announce the release of VoIP calls was the same Google through a tweet by Scott Johnston, head of the Google Voice project. The feature had already been made available to some users in September and from this week will start the official release in the United States and it will take a few weeks to complete the operation. For the moment VoIP calls are only available for U.S. users, but in the future they will also arrive in Italy.
To make a VoIP call, you’ll need to use your Google Voice virtual number and be connected to the Wi-Fi or data network of your SIM card.
