Reasons not to buy an Android phone (32GB) in 2017

Android Nougat is coming and you’ll need a lot more space to make it work along with very “bulky” apps like Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp

This is the year of Android Nougat that will revolutionize the management of space in the smartphone because of the dual partition. The 32GB models still work well with Marshmallow, but if you’re going to buy a new phone aim straight for 64GB models, or higher, to not risk regretting it in the future.

Just do some math to realize this. System applications, such as Google Play Services, including data, can take up over 500MB. The space taken up by Google programs is around 250MB. You’re unlikely to install any other apps, right? Snapchat and Facebook Messenger are two examples of “space guzzlers” that can take out between 100 and 200MB. Other apps, such as WhatsApp potentially have a huge archive, perhaps years and years of personal chats, photos and videos, that can’t be downloaded to an SD card. Then there are apps like Instagram, Twitter and Chrome, just to name a few, that take up hundreds of Megabytes even on newly purchased models.

Not just cloud

And the trend is to develop increasingly sophisticated, complex and space-hungry applications as well as cameras capable of taking very high-quality photos and videos that can take tens of Gigabytes. It’s true that by now cloud services – such as Google Photos – are increasingly used and help lighten the data baggage contained in Android smartphones, but it’s also true that, in any case, more and more space will be needed on devices in the future.

Nougat doubles

There’s the Nougat issue not to be underestimated that, in practice, duplicates many of the partitions of the Android operating system, such as the system and vendor partitions. Put simply, this means that the space taken up by the OS on a Nougat phone could be double that of a similar model running Marshmallow. It should also be mentioned that this only applies to new models running Android 7.0 and above because upgrading from Marshmallow to Nougat will not, at least in the immediate term, require extra space. It will be very easy to see top-of-the-line models allocating more than 10 GB of space to the OS before a single app is loaded.
