Qualcomm Snapdragon 778 5G: a chip for mid-range smartphones, but almost top

The new SoC from Qualcomm was created for mid-high-end smartphones, where it brings functionality and performance not far from the top.

Qualcomm launches a new processor intended for mid-high-end 5G smartphones: it is the Snapdragon 778 and the name, or rather the number, could confuse users. For some time now, in fact, Qualcomm has been using the initials 7xx for mid-high-end SoCs and 8xx for high-end ones. But the power of the processors is now so high that this Snapdragon 778 is almost not known in what band to put it.

In theory, and given the name Snapdragon 778, this is a chip that is a step below the Snapdragon 780G already presented (and which in turn is a kind of Snapdragon 888 low cost). Basically, reading the specs, you’d have a hard time considering the 778 a processor for mid-range devices. And, in fact, it’s already been announced that the Snapdragon 778 will be used in the new basic Honor 50, while the Honor 50 Pro and Honor 50 Pro+ are expected to have the Snapdragon 888. In short, to make it very simple: never before has there been a crowding of smartphone chips and never before have device manufacturers had such a wide choice of processors (and such low availability, unfortunately). But what’s good inside Snapdragon 778?

Qualcomm Snapdragon 778: how it’s made

Reading the Snapdragon 778 5G’s specs you can guess the fact that it’s an almost twin of Snapdragon 780G. The manufacturing process changes (5nm on the 780G and 6nm on the 778 5G), but the 8-core Kryo 670 CPU with a maximum frequency of 2.4 GHz remains identical.

The GPU is an Adreno 642L, while the artificial intelligence engine is again the Qualcomm Hexagon 770. Thanks to the triple ISP processor for image processing the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 778 5G can simultaneously handle 3 images or three videos, coming from 3 different lenses of the smartphone. 4K video recording with HDR+ colors is also supported.

5G connectivity is offered by the built-in Snapdragon X53 5G modem, which is compatible with both millimeter and Sub-6 GHz waves. There is also no lack of Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, with speeds up to 2.9 Gbps.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 778: when will we see it

There are already many brands that have announced they will integrate the new Snapdragon 778 5G chip in their smartphones: the aforementioned Honor, iQOO, Motorola, Oppo, Realme and Xiaomi.

The first devices with Snapdragon 778 will be available to the general public by the summer, the first could be Honor 50, which will be officially presented in late May.
