PostePay update, the scam travels via email

The State Police has discovered a new scam organized to steal the credentials of PostePay users, let’s see how to spot it and how to defend ourselves

Scams related to fake PostePay messages continue to reap victims on the Net. A new fraud organized by a group of cyber criminals has been discovered by the State Police who, through their Facebook page “Commissariato di PS online – Italia”, has warned all users of the service.

The scam acts in the most classic way, that is, with a fake message via e-mail. The criminals hide behind an account that imitates the official PostePay account. The message informs users that following an update, the service has been temporarily suspended. In order to reactivate payments to the account it is necessary to click on the link in the message and enter your personal data. Obviously this is a set-up, the purpose is simply to steal credentials from the victims of the trap. However, there are some details that should be read carefully to unmask the scam, let’s see what they are.

How to defend yourself

The first piece of advice is the classic one: never trust attachments and links that reach you via email. Our bank or our Post Office service will never warn us of an important change exclusively through an email. So let’s avoid believing everything we read and check the links before clicking on them, even if the accounts sending them seem reliable. In the specific case of this scam unmasking it is simple. The text is written with several grammatical errors, so much so that PostePay is often written PoslePay, and even the message does not have a single formatting. An aspect that makes the scam not very credible even in the graphic aspect.
