Polygram uses artificial intelligence to turn users’ facial reaction to images and videos posted on the app into emoticons
Emoticons have become a useful tool not only to wittily embellish messages sent or shared, but also to communicate. In some cases it is difficult to choose the most suitable smiley face to express one’s emotions. A problem that perhaps Polygram has managed to solve.
Polygram is an app that transforms photos into emoticons. And it does so in real time, using the front-facing camera and, above all, artificial intelligence. It is a social application that allows you to post images and videos, just like Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Compared, however, to these three platforms, Polygram doesn’t let you respond to the contents using one of the many default emoticons. Far from it. The application, using artificial intelligence, is able to recognize the expression of people in videos and images posted and turn them into emoticons.
How does Polygram work
Polygram uses a neural network to “understand” the reaction of a user, which in a few seconds is converted into an emoticon ready to use in the social app. The program, currently available only on the App Store, uses a graphic system inside the iPhone to analyze faces. As anticipated, the app uses the frontal camera. Polygram works by displaying the emoticon, which mirrors expressions, at the bottom of the screen. The emoticon quickly changes based on the facial movements of the person framed. In addition to transforming the image into an emoticon, Polygram allows, like SnapChat, to add animated filters to the published content.
