According to a report by Deutche Bank, the PS5 could cost between 449 and 499 euros in Italy. But the price could also rise: here’s why
What will be the price of the PlayStation 5, out for the holiday season of 2020? No one really knows and, perhaps, neither does Sony. But the cost of the PS5 is a very important factor not only for gamers, but also for Sony itself and for all those who have invested in this company.
So much so that the price of the latest PlayStation is the subject of analysis even in a report by Deutche Bank. The German bank, in fact, knows that if Sony doesn’t get the price right, it could repeat what happened at the launch of the PS3: slow sales, up to the price adjustment. And this, to investors, would not like at all. Deutche Bank’s analysis, therefore, started from the price of PS5 components, at least those already known, to estimate a credible price range for the PlayStation 5 in Europe. Starting with this price, it then also estimated PS5 sales in the first two years of marketing.
How much will the PS5 cost
According to the current PS5 component list, Deutche Bank estimated a production cost of between $386 and $477. If the final production cost of the PS5 were to average out between the two extremes, then a selling price within $499 would be credible.
How much will the PS5 cost in Italy
If $499 is the right price in the US, then we need to see if the final price in the EU and Italy will simply be €499 or if the exchange rate will be applied. In the first case the PS5 in Italy would cost 499 euros, in the second, however, at the current exchange rate the PS5 would cost around 449 euros.
How many PS5s will be sold?
Then Deutche Bank moves on to a second question: how many PS5s will Sony be able to sell? Less than the company would hope, probably, and for two reasons. The first is that $499 (assuming that’s what the price is eventually) is well above the psychological threshold of $399 (PS4’s launch price). The second is that, in 2020, the competition will be quite fierce and Sony will no longer have to contend only with other manufacturers of gaming consoles (Microsoft first and foremost) but also with the emerging phenomenon of gaming in the cloud (read Google Stadia). According to Deutche Bank, therefore, Sony will sell 14 million PS5s by 2022. The PS4, in two years, had touched 14.8 million pieces sold.
