Mozilla, what is the “Master Password” and how to use it

This is a system that requires you to enter a master password in order to be able to use all the login credentials saved in the Firefox browser

Browsers allow you to also save passwords to access sites. A convenient but also dangerous feature, especially if the computer is shared with other people. Anyone could, in fact, access our accounts, using the credentials stored in the browsers.

The advice is to try as much as possible not to store passwords within the browsers. Sometimes it becomes difficult not to store protection keys in browsers. The reason is quite simple. Most users have several accounts and therefore need to remember several passwords, associated with as many usernames and emails. Taking advantage of the service offered by almost all browsers, it is possible to store profile data without worrying about entering login credentials every time. As we have seen, however, the system represents a risk for our security. Mozilla Firefox, one of the most popular browsers, integrates a feature that protects the storage of passwords: “Master Password”.

This is a system that requires you to enter a general password to be able to use all the login credentials saved in the Firefox browser. In practice, it will no longer be possible to login to sites without first providing the browser with the “master password”. The service works as a kind of password manager: it allows you to store keys in the browser and protect them with a master password.

How to use “Master Password”

To use the tool you must first enable it. In the desktop version you just need to perform a few simple steps. Download and open Mozilla Firefox. Then, click on the menu button (it is the button in the shape of three horizontal lines that is located in the upper right corner). Now, press on “Options”. On the next screen, on the left side there are several items: select “Security”. Here you’ll have to check the option “Use a master password”. Now all you have to do is choose a password and enter it in the browser, following Mozilla’s instructions. The system will also help you identify a complex key, evaluating the security level of the one you have chosen.

The Master Password can also be activated in the Mozilla version for mobile devices and the process is practically the same.

To change the master password you just need to enter “Security” again and press on “Change master password”. And to remove it? Simple: uncheck “Use a master password”, enter the stored key and finally press “Remove”. And that’s it.
