Mobile World Congress 2018: the most anticipated smartphones

From February 26 to March 1, Barcelona hosts the Mobile World Congress 2018, the trade show dedicated to the world of smartphones. Here’s what to expect

The Mobile World Congress 2018 is now just around the corner. From February 26 to March 1, 2018, Barcelona will host the world’s most important event dedicated to the world of smartphones, and all the major companies are ready to present their new devices from the Spanish stage.

As has been the case for several years now, in the days leading up to the start of MWC 2018, the presentation events for the various smartphones will be held. There are many expected devices, but to steal the show will definitely be the Samsung Galaxy S9. The South Korean company has chosen Barcelona to present the world premiere of its new device. Nokia will also be in the game. After its success last year, the Finnish company will be present at Mobile World Congress 2018 with three or four new smartphones.

The big absentee will be Huawei. The Chinese company will be present at MWC 2018, but will not present any new top-of-the-line smartphones. The launch of the Huawei P20, the first smartphone with three rear sensors, has been postponed to the end of March and will take place in Paris. But even without the Chinese company, it will be a very interesting Mobile World Congress 2018: here are all the most awaited smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus

The spotlight is all on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus, the two new top of the range of the South Korean company. Compared to last year, the presentation and release date has been brought forward by about a month. The smartphone resumes the design of last year’s model, although under the screen we will find a renewed hardware compartment.

On the Galaxy S9 there will be the Exynos 9810 chipset (very similar to the Snapdragon 845) with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The screen will be 5.8 inches with QuadHD+ resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio. 12 Megapixel rear camera with 1.5 focal length aperture. The Galaxy S9 Plus will not only have a larger screen (6.2 inches) but also a more performance hardware compartment. On board there will be the same chipset (Exynos 9810) but with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. In the back, however, we will find a dual photo sensor.

The two smartphones will also have some new features developed specifically by Samsung for the occasion. There will be an artificial intelligence system that will allow you to use the smartphone faster and improve the quality of the images and there will also be facial recognition, which will use a technology for 3D scanning of the face. The South Korean company has also developed a system similar to the Animoji present on the iPhone X. The presentation of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus will take place on February 25.

All the news from Nokia at MWC 2018

After returning last year to the world of smartphones, Nokia and HMD Global (the company that produces smartphones under the Finnish brand) plan to increase their market share for 2018. And the stage at Mobile World Congress 2018 will be used to show off the new phones coming out this year. For the moment the only sure smartphones are the Nokia 1 and the Nokia 7 Plus. The first one is an entry-level with rather limited features and that will have inside Android Go, the version of the green robot’s operating system dedicated to less performing devices. The Nokia 7 Plus, however, will be a very interesting smartphone. 6-inch screen with very thin bezels, Snapdragon 660, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. In the back will find place a dual camera made by Carl Zeiss. In addition to these two smartphones could also be presented two other devices: the Nokia 4 and the Nokia 9, but confirmations in this sense there are none. The Nokia 4 is a mid-range smartphone, while the Nokia 9 is a top-of-the-line one that should have the Snapdragon 845 on board.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s

The Chinese company should bring to Mobile World Congress 2018 a new version of the smartphone launched last September. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s, in addition to a new design (even thinner bezels with a small indentation in the upper right corner where the front camera will find its place), will also have a new photo compartment: Snapdragon 845, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The smartphone should also have a system for unlocking through facial recognition and a fingerprint sensor under the screen.

Sony bets on the top of the range

The Japanese company will be present at Mobile World Congress 2018 with the Xperia XZ2 and the Xperia XZ Premium 2. From the rumors that have emerged in recent months, both devices are top-of-the-line devices. The Sony Xperia XZ2 will have a Snapdragon 845 chipset with 4/6GB of RAM and 64/128GB of internal storage. 5.47-inch Full HD screen. At the back, there will be a dual rear camera with two 12-megapixel sensors and 13-megapixel front camera. The Sony XZ Premium 2 will have slightly better features: Snapdragon 845 with 6GB of RAM and at least 128GB of internal storage. In the back there will be a dual camera but with the main sensor of 18 Megapixels and the secondary one of 12 Megapixels. 5.7-inch screen with QuadHD resolution.

Everything we will see at Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona

There will also be other presentations at MWC 2018. Asus will present the Zenfone 5, a mid-range smartphone that will feature an indentation at the top of the screen (like on the iPhone X). LG will present a new version of the V30 (renamed 2018 for the occasion): same technical features (only the memory will be 256GB) but with a new artificial intelligence system that will manage the photo compartment. Motorola will also be in Barcelona and will do so by presenting the Moto G6 and other devices of the same family. Smartphones that in recent years have stood out for their excellent value for money.
