A text message invites you to click on a link to find out where your iPhone7 has been found, but it’s just a scam to steal your personal data
They think one, they do a hundred. Smartphones and instant messaging applications have become the new tools of choice for attackers to engineer their scams. All it takes is a simple message sent via SMS to succeed in laying a trap for thousands of people.
This is exactly what is happening these days with the “lost iPhone” scam. To raise the alarm is the Police through its Facebook account “Commissariato di PS Online – Italia”, which has received several reports from some users who were sent a strange message warning them that their iPhone 7 Jet Black had been found. And it invited them to click on a link to find out where the smartphone had been geolocated. Needless to say, this is a scam and the sole objective of the scammers is to obtain the personal data of users and then sell them on the dark web.
How to defend yourself from the scam
The Police, via its social profile, warns users that, in addition to personal data, the scammers activate on the smartphone of the unsuspecting user also paid services such as subscriptions to ringtones, horoscopes and wallpapers. In order to deactivate them, it is necessary to call the customer service of your phone operator and ask for the money stolen illegally.
The tips to defend yourself from these phishing attacks are always the same: first of all, you should never click on links of dubious origin: it is very likely that they hide viruses or scams. Moreover, when you surf the Net or receive messages of this kind, you must be very careful and be wary of unclear SMS.
