The robotic device bends and rotates by measuring, thanks to some sensors, the involuntary movement of the hand. Starting price $195
Small objects, but big inventions that can improve lives. A company has created Liftware Level, the first intelligent cutlery designed for people with motor disabilities in the upper limbs.
The robotic tool, once gripped, flexes and adapts to sudden and unintentional movements of the hand, thus allowing the cutlery to stay in the correct position in the path from the plate to the mouth of the infirm. Those who have been victims of cerebral palsy or other disabling diseases, face great problems, among which we find, in fact, also the difficulty to feed themselves. Continuous tremors and sudden movements of the hand force these people to rely inevitably on someone. With Liftware Level, users have the opportunity to regain some independence.
Not the first
In fact, Liftware Level is not the first hi-tech device made for the disabled. The company Desin has, for example, developed Obi, a robot that helps people who, due to some form of brain block, have almost no mobility in their limbs. The device consists of four small food dishes and a robotic arm that basically feeds the sick person. Liftware itself, before Level, created Steady, a device designed for Parkinson’s patients. The object, in fact, works by stabilizing the cutlery, thus preventing food from escaping from the utensil.

New Features
Liftware Level, however, adds new features compared to its younger brother. The smart device, thanks to some sensors, automatically adapts to the involuntary movement of the hand, rotating the handle and keeping the interchangeable head of the cutlery straight. Liftware Level can be used, in fact, both as a fork and as a spoon. The Liftware Level set includes a charger, a handle, an interchangeable spoon, and a travel bag. The starting cost is $195.
