Jaguar has created the Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo Coupe, an all-electric hyper car capable of reaching 320km/h. But it won’t hit the market
Jaguar believes in an electrified future. The British automaker launched one of the first zero-emission SUVs, the Jaguar I-Pace, and is a mainstay in Formula E. Not only that, the electric SUV was also the star of the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY, the world’s first international championship for electric production cars, an event that supports the FIA Formula E championship.
Jaguar’s commitment is in line with the British government’s decision to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars from 2040. The historic British brand is continuing the process of electrification of its vehicles that, from 2020, will include versions powered by electricity or hybrid technology.
Jaguar: the new electric hyper car
Jaguar has unveiled a new all-electric hypercar, an innovative car, a super sports car reserved for an exclusive audience and that can be driven only through a joypad. Yes, the new Jaguar hyper car will be exclusively digital and will come to life within Vision Gran Turismo, the project launched by the creators of the famous video game Gran Turismo to stimulate car manufacturers to imagine a concept car of the future and realize it in digital form for the video game. The Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo Coupe will be available for use in Gran Turismo Sport on PS4 from the end of November.
Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo Coupe: the car’s features
The Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo Coupe is a super sports car with a futuristic look and a racing appearance. The car is inspired by some famous Jaguars of the past, racing cars that made history such as the 1951 Jaguar C-Type and 1954 Jaguar D-Type. The highlights of these two cars have been reinterpreted in a modern way by Her Majesty’s engineers, giving new lines and new, sleeker forms to the wheel arches, sides and front hood of these legendary racing cars of the past.
The Vision Gran Turismo features active aerodynamics through the use of an electronically controlled spoiler that changes inclination depending on the needs of the car, making it much more stable both in a straight line and when cornering. The Jaguar Vision Gran Turismo Coupe features a rigid monocoque chassis made of carbon fiber on which three powerful electric motors have been grafted together with batteries for power. The three motors are capable of delivering 1,020 hp and 1,200 Nm of maximum torque ensuring this prototype accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 2.0 seconds and has a top speed in excess of 320 km/h.
The interior also reflects the sporty and racing nature of the British concept car. The cabin is reminiscent of the D-Type, but more modern and functional. The instrumentation displays all the information and data related to driving in a three-dimensional way thanks to a series of holograms projected on the windows. The car boasts a single large boomerang-shaped digital display positioned immediately behind the steering wheel. Finally, the Artificial Intelligence system affectionately called KITT-E is ready to facilitate the work of the driver.
An exercise in style?
For now yes, the work of the British engineers and developers could only be taken as an exercise in style and a way to make all fans of super cars and avid players of Gran Turismo Sport dream. But this is not always the case and these hypercars born from the imagination of a team of engineers and designers sometimes become reality. The Vision Gran Turismo project was born in 2013 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Gran Turismo series. It was initially born as a real challenge to car manufacturers to create innovative and impossible cars, but as always reality exceeds fantasy and some supercars, first designed and produced for the famous video game were then really made. This is the case of the Toyota FT-1 of 2014 and the Audi E-Tron Vision Gran Turismo. Will it also be the turn of Jaguar? For now, it is not known.
