IPhone, in 2020 TouchID returns: it will be revolutionary

Apple is working on a new technology to implement the fingerprint sensor under the screen: it should debut on the iPhone 2020

Revolution at Apple. After rumors that would see coming next year a new version of the iPhone SE, the smartphone always appreciated for its compact and contained forms, new rumors give for certain the possibility that the Cupertino company may soon dust off its Touch ID.

It would seem that Apple is testing both internally and on the suppliers side, a new fingerprint reader in-display, ie integrated into the screen, as currently happens in all the smartphones of its main competitors. For the Cupertino company this would be a big step forward, despite the delay in development compared to its competitors. Samsung, Huawei, OnePlus, Xiaomi have started since the end of last year to propose smartphones with the fingerprint sensor integrated into the screen. The technology developed by Apple is expected to see the light of day on the iPhone 2020 or at the latest on the iPhone 2021.

Apple’s TouchID

Apple introduced fingerprint scanning in 2013 following the acquisition of start-up AuthenTec Inc, a true pioneer in the field. The California company’s TouchID integrated into the Home button, in addition to unlocking the phone, can be used to approve payments and authorize app downloads. In 2017, it was replaced by the FaceID that allows access to the smartphone thanks to facial detection, at the time a complete novelty compared to its competitors.

In 2018, with the launch of the new iPhone Xr and iPhone Xs, the TouchID sensor had been permanently put on the back burner as facial recognition was considered more secure than fingerprint scanning. But the new TouchID embedded in the screen is expected to work symbiotically with FaceID, which is also being updated, thus increasing the security of the Cupertino-based company’s devices. Also because FaceID is now a fundamental feature of Applephones and forms the basis for portrait mode shots, as well as the ability to support various features related to augmented reality such as Animoji.

iPhone SE and TouchID

The new TouchID should make its appearance in preview on what could be considered the first true low-cost phone from Apple. We’re talking about the iPhone SE 2, which should be based on a very similar spec sheet to the iPhone 8 with a 4.7-inch LCD (not OLED) screen that should house the new fingerprint sensor. Expected to be released in spring 2020 at a cost of around $400, the new iPhone SE is expected to feature a single camera and 128GB of storage.
