Instagram, chats also arrive in the desktop version

Instagram is testing a big news: you will be able to chat with your contacts using your computer. Here’s how it works

In the ranking of the most popular and loved apps by users around the world, Instagram plays a special role: it is now part of the everyday life of many, and according to the Digital Report 2019 by Hootsuite and We Are Social is used by 55% of Italian users.

Despite this, Instagram still has some gaps to fill. First of all, it’s primarily designed for mobile use. The main functions are not executable from desktop. For example, it is not possible to post Stories from the computer or to entertain a conversation via private messages.  However, for some time now, the company has decided to adapt some functions to a computer use as well. A few months ago, it introduced the possibility of publishing content from PC, and now it has announced the arrival of chats in the desktop version. The news is not yet official, but the expert and developer Jane Manchun Wong has already launched the indiscretion through some tweets.

Instagram chats on computer: how it works

Jane Manchun Wong revealed the existence of a feature hidden inside the code of Instagram, and in her tweet she revealed some features.

The developer described the interface, pointing out that the chats are listed in a sidebar shown on the right side of the computer monitor. The visuals are therefore very similar to those of Facebook Messenger. This detail has led Wong to advance a hypothesis: probably the company intends to unify the chats of its applications, namely those of Messenger precisely, Instagram and WhatsApp. In the future, users won’t have to jump from one application to another to chat with their contacts.

This novelty could be a real godsend for those who find themselves managing hundreds of messages daily, coming from different platforms. We are particularly referring to companies or influencers. In fact, managing a huge amount of chats from smartphones is possible, but having them available on the large monitor of the computer and writing with a proper keyboard would make the work smoother and faster. All that’s left to do is wait: Instagram could really make this function possible for its users.

In the last period there has been no shortage of news, thanks also to the advance of Chinese apps. Among the latter, TikTok stands out and, after having conquered the universe of the very young, is beginning to make its way into the minds of older people and especially in corporate marketing strategies. Of course Mark Zuckerberg is not watching and tries in every way new appealing functions for its creatures. One of the latest is related to the disappearance of the likes from Instagram and the change of the user interface, from which the tab “Followers” will disappear.
