Lodovico è il libro dello studioso italiano Francesco Musesti che ha ispirato uno dei produttori del Il Trono di Spade, Vince Gerardis, a creare un prequel della storia dei promessi sposi. That branch of Lake Como is therefore waiting to see the light in Gerardis and Maria Grazia Saccà’s project, from the production company CIAO: Creatività Italiana Americana Organizzata, founded last year by Gerardis himself.

Provvidenza is the name of this new TV series, inspired by The Betrothed and set in the corrupt and gloomy Milan in the late 16th century. The series, assures Gerardis, will maintain the dark and gothic atmospheres of Milan divided by the war between famine and hunger. The jump in time, compared to Alessandro Manzoni’s Promessi Sposi, brings the story to 40 years before the events of Renzo and Lucia. There will be strong psychological elements in Provvidenza, as well as the role of the plague which, like Winter in The Iron Throne, will be a central, fundamental element in the narrative.

Provvidenza: what is the TV series about

The novel Lodovico, from which the TV series Provvidenza is based, tells the story of Friar Cristoforo before he became a man of the cloth and took his vows, renouncing his name. He converted to religion only after he had killed a nobleman in a bloody duel. After the killing, Lodovico took refuge in a Capuchin convent and there he lost his name. Manzoni describes Lodovico, Fra Cristoforo then, simply as the son of a merchant, that’s why he doesn’t give him the dignity of a surname.

In this context there are many other characters of the Betrothed that we find in this fascinating prequel for TV. We have the ruthless aristocrat known as the Innominate and there is no shortage of  the Griso and Cardinal Borromeo. We also find Lucia, whose character in the prequel Providence is strongly linked to witchcraft.

Provvidenza: the trivia of the prequel

Presenting the project to channels and streaming services, the producers describe Providence as a tragedy set in a dark, harsh and cruel world reminiscent of Game of Thrones. We still don’t know who among the many streaming platforms the one that will grab the distribution of this new series. What we do know is that there are all the elements for us to be passionate about this new masterpiece.

Lodovico, the novel from which the prequel is based, will be released in bookstores only next fall.
