Between Thursday, September 6, 2018 and Saturday, September 8 will start the first day of the Nations League, the new competition for national teams of Uefa that puts up for grabs four places for direct access to the European Championship in 2020. In fact, the tournament will replace the classic international friendlies for European teams.

The Nations League is structured in four different leagues for a total of 55 nations, decided by UEFA according to the ranking of the national teams. This means that in each league more or less there are teams very close to each other in the ranking and that on paper should be equal. This should increase the spectacle. Within each league there are 4 groups, divided in this way: League A, 12 teams, 4 rounds of 3 teams; League B, 12 teams, 4 rounds of 3 teams; League C, 15 teams, 1 round of 3 teams, 3 rounds of 4 teams; League D, 6 teams, 4 rounds of 4 teams. Italy, being among the teams with the highest value in the UEFA ranking, is inserted in League A in Group 3 with Portugal and Poland.

How does the Nations League work

As mentioned, the purpose of the Nations League is to compete for a place in each League for the next Euro 2020. How? Simple, each league will have its own separate path. The four group winners from each individual division will face off in two semifinals and a final, and whoever wins will go to the European Championship without going through qualifying. If a team that wins its Nations League group already has access to Euro 2020, then the second team in the group of that particular team will be considered qualified for the final phase of the tournament. Also interesting are the relegations. The first qualifiers of each league group D, C and B in fact for the future edition of the Nations League will take the place of the last qualifiers of the groups of leagues A, B and C. Giving life to a sort of championship with continuous promotions and relegations from one league to another between one edition and another.
