How to start your computer in safe mode

Slow mode is a tool present in all versions of Microsoft’s operating system, useful to solve some Windows problems

For a number of reasons (and they can be many) sometimes we need to reboot the computer in safe mode, a very useful procedure through which Windows loads only what is necessary to run, excluding everything else (apps, programs and third-party drivers) from the reboot.

The Safe Mode is a tool present in all versions of Microsoft’s operating system, from the oldest to the most recent. It is mainly a feature used when the computer has problems. The reason is quite simple. The PC starts up, as you see, loading only files and drivers that are useful for the system to work. In this way it is possible to make an initial diagnostic of the problem encountered. If the error does not occur in safe mode, it means that the cause of the “failure” is not to be found in the Windows files and drivers, but elsewhere. It is possible, for example, that an external program is to blame.

Now let’s figure out how to restart the computer in safe mode. We will explain the procedure for the three most widely used versions of the Windows operating system: Windows XP, Windows 7 and finally Windows 10.

Windows XP and Windows 7

Method 1

There are two methods to launch the computer into Safe Mode. The most immediate one is the one that requires you to press the f8 key at startup. Let’s see how to do that. It’s really very simple. It is sufficient, to start, to turn on the pc again. As soon as you see the classic information about the computer’s features, and even before the Windows logo appears, you’ll have to click the f8 key several times until the menu with the operating system’s advanced settings appears. Here all you have to do is, using the arrows, choose Safe Mode and press enter. That’s it.

Method 2

The above procedure doesn’t always work, though. What to do? Just follow another “way”. Restart the computer normally, and once you’ve done that, close all open programs. Type “msconfig” in “Run” and click on “OK”. A window will open: “System Configuration”. Here you’ll have to select “Startup options” and then check “Safe mode”. You’ll be able to choose whether to start only the basic functions, by clicking on “minimal”, or also the Internet, by clicking on “network”. At this point all you have to do is press “Ok”.

Your PC will continue to reboot in Safe Mode until you disable, following the exact same procedure, the option started from “System Configuration”.

It’s worth noting that the second method also works on Windows 10.

Windows 10

Method 1

In this case too there are several methods. Safe mode can be started from settings or from the login screen. Let’s start with the first option. Go into the pc settings and then into “Update and Security”. Next, click on “Restore” and then on “Advanced Boot” and finally on “Restart Now”. The PC will restart and show a window (it will be called “Choose an option”) where you have to click first on “Troubleshooting” and “Advanced options” and then on “Startup settings” and “Restart”.

At this point, after the computer logs in, you’ll see a number of options: press button 4 for Safe Mode without internet, button 5 if you prefer to start the connection as well.

Method 2

Restarting Windows from the login screen is just as simple. Turn the computer off and on and when it restarts, press the power button and the SHIFT key at the same time and then “Restart”. From here on, the procedure to launch Windows in Safe Mode is identical to the previous one.
