How to enable Flash on Google Chrome for some specific sites

There are still many sites that use Adobe’s program to display images and videos. Here’s how to enable Flash on Chrome

You may have noticed: Chrome, like most browsers, automatically disables Adobe Flash, a free and still very popular software that allows you to display images, videos and other multimedia content. The application has often come under fire because of security flaws that have been discovered.

Vulnerabilities that in some cases have been used by hackers to execute malicious code on users’ devices. Some of the major websites have thus started adopting the more secure HTML 5 programming language. Not all of them though. There are many webmasters who still use the old and fragile plug-in. The only way to properly display the content of these sites, therefore, is to enable freeware. How to do that? The story of downloading the program directly from the manufacturer’s site no longer works. In fact, you need to get your hands on Chrome’s settings to enable Flash when you need it.

How to enable Adobe Flash: first steps

The first action to take, if you want to enable the free software for some specific sites, is to check the Flash settings in Chrome. Open a new tab and type in the address bar the following string: chrome://flags. At this point you’ll have to check if the item “Prefer HTML over Flash” is set to “Default”. Don’t touch anything at all. As Chrome suggests, any changes are “at your own risk”. Now it’s time to check if the installed version of Flash is the latest one. To do this, you need to open a new tab again, enter chrome://components/ and press enter.

Enter Content Settings

After these preliminary actions, it’s time to enable the program to display multimedia content. Open Chrome’s settings (click on the three-dot icon in the top right corner). Now go into “Show advanced settings” and press on “Content settings” (you can find it in “Privacy”). Check that in “Flash” the item “Ask before allowing sites to run Flash” is active. Never enable the first option: the risks for computer security are very high.

Click on Manage Exceptions

Now there is only one step left to enable Flash for some specific sites. Still staying in “Content Settings”, under the “Flash” option we press on “Manage Exceptions”. Here you’ll find a pop-up window where you can enter the URL of the site for which you want Chrome to run Flash. Press on finish and you’re done. From now on the Google browser will no longer block the Adobe program for the selected website.
