How to choose the name and domain for your company website

When making a website for your company the first thing you need to decide is the domain name. Which extension is the best? Here’s our advice

For a company that lands on the Net, the first step is to create a website. Choosing the domain that will host our site is a fundamental step for successful indexing on search engines. Choosing a name that does not refer to the activity or the name of our company, makes it more complicated the positioning on search engines and useless the creation of the website.

The name of the website is the first decision that a company must take. The simplest idea is to use the company name for the website as well. But it is not always possible: if the domain has already been registered, we will have to opt for another choice. For example, you can add to the name of the site the city where the company is located (www.nomeaziendacittà.it). The choice of the domain (registering a domain means to associate a unique name to the address of the server where the website is hosted) is also important for a choice of brand identity. The name used for the website identifies only one company: ours.

How to choose the domain name of the website

Is it better to choose the name of the company or to use keywords that refer to the activity of the company? Google rewards websites that have the company’s name in the site name. For indexing on search engines it is preferable to use a domain www.nomeazienda.it. A valid alternative is to insert, in addition to the company name, also the activity of reference. Very often it happens that the name chosen for the website is already occupied and therefore it is necessary to find an alternative. We suggest you a domain www.nomeaziendaattività.it. Since the business is also a keyword, Google will not penalize us.

Some companies also use hyphens in the domain name (www.nome-azienda-attività.it). This is a practice we do not recommend, especially for search engine ranking purposes. The name of the website must be clear and readable, easy to write and without impediments that make the job of Google positioning more complicated.

What extension to choose for the company’s website

The extension of a website is the last two or three letters that we type after the domain name. Usually it identifies the reference market, but there are some extensions that we can define “international” (such as .com or .net). In Italy the most used is logically the extension .it and for an Italian company you can’t forget to have the site with this extension. But it’s advisable to buy also a domain with .com or .net extension, especially if our company sells a lot abroad.
