Google Play Store, one free app a week

Google has updated its Play Store with a new section that gives away a paid app every seven days. No word on whether the feature will apply to everyone

One free app a week. That’s Google’s latest initiative. The Mountain View giant released this interesting novelty last weekend, without much fanfare, but unfortunately without specifying whether it will be available globally. Currently, it seems that it is only accessible to Android users residing in the United States.

This new section, perhaps, to someone might seem like déjà vu because in 2015 Google offered every day a little program, usually paid, at no cost for promotional purposes. Also on that occasion, without much explanation, the initiative simply disappeared from the store. Let’s hope that this time, not only will it continue, but that it will expand its reach – which currently seems limited to the United States – reaching other markets, including Italy. The first app to pop up in the “Free App of the Week” section is Card Wars – a game based on Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time franchise – which normally costs $2.99.

Google only recently allowed developers to sell their apps for a fee, but also to offer them for free for as long as they wanted as long as they left the real price well in sight so that users were aware of the savings. Google also announced at this year’s GDC (Game Developers Conference) that the Play Store will improve its games section with reviews curated by the Android store’s editorial team.
