Google Maps updates and traffic lights arrive: how they work

The Google Maps update has arrived and with it also the new option to display traffic lights: here’s how they work

For a few months now, people have been talking about the arrival on Google Maps of traffic lights that will be reported at intersections, but only now more users are starting to be able to take advantage of this feature. As the app is updated in the United States, icons of small traffic lights begin to appear.

Although the new feature is not yet available to everyone, since the latest update released for Google Maps more and more users will be able to access it. This is a feature that is automatically activated, and therefore will not be set by the individual user, just as it already happens with Apple Maps, which had launched the novelty in the iOS 13 update in anticipation of the release of the new operating system. The indication of traffic lights is definitely an important step forward, because it provides additional information to the driver who will be able to better navigate the streets.

Google Maps, how traffic lights work

Downloading the Google Maps update, some of the users have noticed the appearance of a small icon in the shape of traffic lights at intersections. The roll out of the new feature of Google’s navigator had started a couple of months ago, but in the last few days more and more users are reporting access to the novelty. Compared to the first reported trials, there doesn’t seem to have been any evolution on the icon’s appearance. The small traffic lights appear in the middle of the intersection and automatically adapt to the size and change of the map.

The traffic light icons appear both while viewing the map and while navigating, thus providing the user with valuable information to be able to determine where they are and especially understand in some cases the reason for a slowdown or traffic that might form at an intersection. At the moment, the new feature for Google Maps has only been reported in the United States, but shortly with the next updates should arrive in the rest of the world.
