Maps launches a new update to calibrate the compass: it will be possible to determine the geolocation through Live View

The geolocation represents a fundamental factor for the functioning of Google Maps. In fact, it allows the application to detect the users’ location and offer them the best directions to reach the chosen destination. But this is not the only important element used by the system to propose routes to users.

The service also relies on the compass, which is normally included among the default functions of a smartphone. In its latest update, Google Maps has improved the compass functionality with augmented reality in Live View mode. This allows you to understand in which direction the device is oriented and thus offer better routes, especially when the app suggests the direction to take to continue walking. In fact, GPS often fails to geolocate the user, especially when he or she is in a big city, full of buildings.

How to calibrate the compass with Google Maps

As mentioned, the compass sensor is built into any mobile device. However, in order for it to work properly you need to calibrate it. Google Maps for Android now lets you calibrate the compass thanks to Live View, which is a mode for navigating and watching routes in augmented reality. This new feature is already active in apps all over the world. To activate it, you just need to press the blue dot that indicates your position: a new screen will open and here you have to follow the directions given by the system.

In a nutshell, you need to spin the phone drawing an eight (8) and this will allow the AI of the software to refine the geolocation of the device. After calibrating the compass, the radius starting from the blue dot indicating the user’s position will decrease, meaning that the operation has been successfully completed and the direction is more accurate.

Google Live View can only be used with ARCore-compatible Android devices and the ARKit system of iPhones. Currently, however, the ability to calibrate the compass is not yet present on Apple devices.

How to start using Live View from your smartphone

Probably not everyone is familiar with Live View from Google Maps. Actually activating the feature is very simple. Just launch the Google Maps app and select a destination by typing it on the search bar or tapping the point on the map. Next, you need to tap on the “Directions” item and select “walk” from the way you want to reach the destination. At this point, the Live View icon appears on the bottom of the screen.

Following the instructions allows the phone to geolocate exactly and when Maps manages to pinpoint the exact location, it shows the surroundings and helps the user reach the destination with ease. Google in its guidelines advises not to stare at the phone for safety reasons and to save the phone’s battery.
