The 2020 Emmy Awars awards ceremony took place tonight in an unusual “anti-covid” version: here are all the winners
The Emmy Awards are a very important event for fans of TV shows. They are commonly referred to as the “Oscars of TV series” and are awarded by the Academy of Television Arts and Science. The 2020 edition was streamed on the night between September 20 and 21.
The ceremony was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, who streamed from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Aside from the live presence of Jennifer Aniston and a few others, all the contestants and winners streamed in from home, perhaps in the company of family or a few close friends. Despite the virtuality, the evening gave numerous satisfactions. In fact, the Oscars of television in recent years have become really important, accomplice the presence of famous actors and Hollywood stars in the casts of TV series. Let’s see which TV series have been awarded and where to watch them in Italy.
Drama category dominated by Succession
One of the big winners of the award ceremony was the TV series Succession. The show won four awards, including Best Drama Series. In addition to this award, the awards for best dramatic actor to Jeremy Strong, best writing to showrunner Jesse Amstrong and best direction to Andrij Parekh stand out. The TV series is a real case of success and has obtained a large following in Italy. In our country Succession is broadcasted by NOW TV.
The award for Best Actress in a Drama Series went to Zendaya, who at 24 years old is the youngest winner in history in this category. She won the award thanks to her role in Euphoria, the American teen drama also available on Sky and NOW TV in Italy.
Julia Garner won the award for best lead actress in a drama series for her participation in Ozark (available in Italy on Netflix Italy) in the same category to the male, won the award Billy Crudup for The Morning Show, distributed by Apple Tv +.
Watchmen: best mini-series award at the Emmys
The TV mini-series category was won by Watchmen, available on NOW TV. The same show won other awards: best actress in a miniseries to Regina King and best supporting actor in a miniseries to Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
The award for best supporting actress in a mini-series or TV movie instead went to Uzo Aduba, for her performance in Mrs America, which will arrive on TIMVision on October 8. That as best supporting actor in the same category was awarded to Mark Ruffalo, interpreter of I Know This Much Is True, translated into Italy with the title “Un volto, due destini” coming on Sky.
Emmy Awards 2020: awards for the Comedy series category
Another fundamental category for the awards is that of comedies. This year to excel is the show Schitt’s Creek, a funny and irreverent Canadian series, which also deals with LGBTQI+ issues.
The TV series has racked up awards in the category: Catherine O’Hara, the actress who became famous as Kevin’s mother in the cult film “Mommy Lost the Plane” won the award for best leading actress, Annie Murphy, went to the one for best supporting actress. Eugene Levy was awarded as Best Supporting Actor and Dan Levy won the Best Screenplay award for the episode “Happy Ending”.
This is another record for the 2020 edition: before this year no series had won all the major awards in the category dedicated to comedies and no one had ever won so many in a single Emmy ceremony. The TV series is unknown in Italy, but given its success it could soon land in our country, probably on Netflix.
During the evening there were moments of reflection, for example a moment was dedicated to all the excellences who died in 2020, including Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. In addition, this edition is important for the number of nominations and victories won by people of color and during the evening this was a useful reminder of the importance of the movement “Black Lives Matter”.
