Hanson Robotics, a company that produces robots, has chosen the likeness of the famous physicist to explain science to children in a more fun and interactive way
Who knows what Albert Einstein would have thought of this latest stunt. Knowing his sense of humor, he probably would have had a good laugh. But Hanson Robotics’ project is, nevertheless, serious and, if KickStarter’s users like it, the little robot that aspires to the role of home tutor will reach the production phase.
Hanson Robotics has, in fact, just launched a crowdfunding campaign for its latest human-looking, but perhaps a bit creepy, robot that can walk and talk and that, through a series of facial expressions, gestures and voice recognition technology, aims to offer a unique and original learning experience for the most scientifically curious minds. Professor Einstein works in conjunction with a special application – called Stein-O-Matic – that allows users, most likely parents, to access a wide range of study activities programmed specifically for their school-aged children.
How the robot works
(Taken from Kickstarter)
Professor Einstein works, as mentioned, in conjunction with a mobile device – iPad or Android tablet – that communicate via WiFi through the paw of the Stein-O-Matic application. The robot guides the student through interactive lessons, experiments mental exercises, rewarding success with IQ points that can be used to unlock bonus games, new avatars and other special items. The robot, when the lesson is over, turns into a personal digital assistant. It can engage you in a simple chat, as well as answer questions about the weather, celebrities, food, and math, and even manage a calendar and to-do list. What’s most surprising about this robot are the 50 gestures it can reproduce such as smiling, frowning and giving you the famous “tongue-in-cheek” like the real Albert Einstein and (almost) like him responding sarcastically and unpredictably.
The size of Professor Einstein
The Professor Einstein, and perhaps this detail would not have liked the original, is only 35 cm high and powered by batteries estimated to last up to three hours so you can carry it around if you need to do a review on some scientific topic or even just have a chat.
Price and shipping date
If the fundraising goes well, the start of shipments would start next April. While the price of Professor Einstein is $249, a little more than 200 euros.
