An Amazon Fire Tv and a packet of popcorn delivered in full autonomy by a drone and in just 13 minutes to a customer living in the Cambridge countryside
Imagine buying a smartphone or a set of coffee mugs and receiving them in half an hour. Now don’t imagine it because soon it will be reality thanks to Amazon. To be precise in the countryside of Cambridge, England, this is already real. With Amazon Prime Air, in fact, parcels arrive in minutes with drones.
Prime Air: drones make deliveries for Amazon
Amazon’s efforts to make deliveries for small packages with drones have been known for some time now. What seemed like a distant project is now instead much more real. At the moment it’s a very restricted service, for just two people living in the English countryside. Soon, however, the company will expand by tens and then hundreds of customers. The first delivery was made on December 7. The drone did not make a long flight and the process took only 13 minutes. Less than a quarter of an hour this is the time it took to deliver to the user an Amazon Fire Tv and a packet of popcorn.
How does drone delivery work?
Amazon Prime Air’s drones are loaded into a warehouse of the company and then via a roller are placed in a good area for takeoff. They do everything automatically after departure, including disembarkation. Amazon for now has in goals flights of maximum 30 minutes. The drones currently can only carry packages of just over two kilos. Customers can order every day with the drone delivery service but only during daylight hours and the service works only with the right weather conditions. In addition, Amazon for the landing has advised users to place a particular mat so that the drone recognizes where to land.

What are the issues for Amazon PrimeAir?
The drones used for deliveries in England are different from those experienced by Amazon on other occasions. And this suggests that the company wants to equip itself with a varied fleet to be used depending on the packages to be delivered and the conditions of the delivery location. The service of transporting products with drones has been tested not only in England but also in other countries. In Austria, the company is developing sophisticated drone delivery methodologies. The biggest problems, however, concern permits. In the UK Amazon has received permission to fly its drones. It will be much more difficult to get the same permission in the United States. Just as it’s much more complicated to move the Prime Air service from a rural to an urban area. Although, the company may for the foreseeable future allocate drones only to deliveries in rural areas, in those places where a service can’t be as fast as in big cities.
