The 66th edition of the David di Donatello has also come to an end. The award ceremony, conducted by Carlo Conti, was broadcast in prime time on Raiuno on May 11, 2021. This is a crucial event for our country, in fact such awards are also called the Italian Oscars.

The awards are assigned by the Academy of Italian Cinema. The categories are really many: from the best film, to the best leading actor, the best actress, up to the song, the scenic effects and so on. The great triumphant of 2021 was Volevo Nascondermi (I wanted to hide), which received the award for best film, best director and best leading actor. During the evening there was no lack of really emotional moments, such as the posthumous David di Donatello to Mattia Torre, collected by his daughter and the award to Sophia Loren. But the great protagonist was definitely the Italian cinema. Those who missed the evening can catch up on RaiPlay, while the films can be watched on the various streaming platforms, with subscription or on demand.

David di Donatello: the most exciting moments of the evening

The 2021 edition of the Italian cinema awards was full of emotions and fun. The revelation film is Volevo Nascondermi (I Wanted to Hide), which received the award for best film, best director and best leading actor. The film, directed by Giorgio Diritti, is centered on the life of the painter Ligabue, masterfully played by Elio Germano, an actor who also participated in the film L’incredibile storia dell’Isola delle Rose.

But there were also moments of great emotion, such as the withdrawal of the award for Mattia Torre by his daughter Emma, awarded for best screenplay to the film Figli. The writer, screenwriter and director passed away after a long illness in 2019. On stage, the girl was accompanied by her mother and their words of thanks moved the hearts of the entire audience.

Another important moment was the awarding to Sophia Loren of the David for Best Actress in a Leading Role for La vita davanti a sé. “The emotion is the same as the first David 60 years ago is even more,” said the actress.

Immigrated, the piece of Luca Medici, aka Checco Zalone, played in the film Tolo Tolo won the David for best song. L’assegnazione ha destato un po’ di stupore anche perché in nomination c’era anche la canzone di Laura Pausini, candidata agli Oscar 2021.
