CES 2021: LG’s new monitors are “Ultra”

LG presents three top-of-the-line monitors, designed to meet the needs of three major categories of users.

If there is one sector in which LG is among the global leaders, it is certainly that of displays, particularly TV screens and PC monitors. It reaffirmed this at CES 2021 with its new Ultra range, declined into three series: UltraFine, UltraGear and UltraWide.

The three monitor series are aimed at graphics and video professionals, gamers and general productivity, respectively. The sizes of these screens range from 27 to 40 inches, resolutions range from QHD to 5K, and there are two technologies used: Nano IPS for the UltraGear and UltraWide and OLED for the UltraFine. These are therefore very different products, designed to best meet specific needs using the most appropriate technologies in each application area. The UltraGear series, for example, is compatible with Nvidia G-Sync, the UltraWide with AMD FreeSync, and the UltraFine with neither because they’re both of little use for foti and videoediting.

New LG UltraGear: monitors for gaming

The new LG UltraGear are available in 27-, 31.5- and 34-inch sizes and are three very different monitors. The 27-inch is a classic 4K screen (3840×2160 pixels), the 31.5-inch has a QHd resolution (2560×2160), and the 34-inch is a QHD UltraWide (3440×1440 pixels).

While the 31.5-inch gets up to 165 Hz refresh rate, the other two stop at 144 Hz. The 34-inch is compatible with Nvidia G-Sync Ultimate, the other two only with Nvidia G-Sync. All the screens in this series are Nano IPS LCDs.

New LG UltraWide: the monitor for working

The curved 40-inch LG UltraWide monitor also has a Nano IPS LCD panel, but the resolution is a whopping 5120×2160 pixels, or 5K. As the name implies, it’s a monitor that’s wider than it is tall, with a 21:9 ratio to be precise.

Monitors with this aspect ratio are convenient for general productivity, as they offer more room for multitasking. However, support for HDR 10 allows this screen to display great colors as well.

The refresh rate is 72 Hz, low for gaming but great for general productivity. Available connections also include Thunderbolt 4.

New LG UltraWide: the monitor for graphics and video

The latest monitor unveiled by LG at CES 2021 is the 31.5-inch UltraFine, the only one built with 10-bit OLED technology. It is a monitor with classic 4K resolution (3840×2160) and 60 Hz refresh rate.

The ability to show 99% of the DCI-P3 color gamut makes it particularly suitable for graphics and video-editing professionals, to whom this display also offers a contrast of 1,000,000:1.

Among the connections are a USB Type-C with 90W charging, three regular USBs, two DisplayPorts an HDMI port.
