Apple, goodbye to iPhone Touch ID

The three iPhone X models due out in September 2018 will all feature FaceID, the 3D facial recognition developed by Apple. Touch ID will be retired

The TouchID will not be present on the next generation of iPhone X.

The many rumors published in recent months are confirmed by the words leaked by Lumentum Holdings, the only company in the world able to make the special 3D sensors used by Apple for FaceID, the facial recognition system that made its debut on the iPhone X.

Lumentum Holdings’ revenues have skyrocketed in the last quarter and the credit is due to a large order from a very important customer, but on whose name there is the utmost secrecy. All signs, however, point to Apple, so far the only company to mount the VCSEL (vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser) system for facial recognition on its devices. Compared to last year, the number of components ordered by Apple is much higher, which suggests that FaceID will be present on all three iPhone X models that will be launched in September 2018.

Addio TouchID

The TouchID, the biometric fingerprint sensor introduced by Apple with the iPhone 5S will be permanently retired, but there will be no lack of support from Apple to fix any bugs and anomalies. But the future of the world of telephony seems to be facial recognition, now present on most top of the range devices and considered easier, faster and safer to use.

The FaceID together with the notch will also characterize the iPhone X 2018 low-cost, the model with a 6.1-inch LCD screen that will flank the other two models with OLED display. But not only that. According to the latest rumors, FaceID will also be present on the new version of the iPad Pro coming out by the end of the year. Apple’s new tablet will feature a borderless design and 3D facial recognition.

How the 2018 iPhone X will look like

A little more than a month after the official unveiling (the 2018 iPhone X is expected by mid-September) there is little information available about Apple’s new smartphone. Surely the iPhone X 2018 will have the notch (the notch present at the top of the screen) and FaceID, but as far as the technical features are concerned little is known. The smartphone should mount the new SoC A12 and 4GB of RAM, but for the moment this is only speculation. In the back will find place a dual camera placed vertically. The screen size of the three models will be 5.8 – 6.1 – 6.5 inches respectively.
